How Idolatry is Keeping You from Experiencing God's Best
Chasing this world will always disappoint you because what your heart truly longs for is Jesus. He promises to give you everything else you need when you put Him first.
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”—Colossians 3:5, NIV.
Do you ever feel like you’re missing out? That happiness is still out there—beyond your reach?
Maybe you wonder if the right door opened, if anxiety wasn’t a constant struggle, or if your spouse appreciated you more, then you’d call off the search.
But here’s what I’m noticing: Perfect relationships, more success, and less stress aren’t tickets to happiness.
Don’t get me wrong; these things aren’t bad, but the more I’ve spent time chasing them, the more disappointed I became.
I realized that what my heart truly longed for was Jesus.
Trusting anything other than Jesus to complete us invites the enemy to steal our joy and dismantle our peace—a vicious cycle that keeps our hearts restless.
But when we stop striving and trust Jesus alone to care for us, we experience peace knowing He’s in control, and His plans for us are good.
The longer I live, the more I realize why chasing this world exhausts me.
I love how St. Augustine put it:
“You have made us for Yourself, oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
Jesus loves us too much to see us settle for cheap counterfeits. After all He’s done, He deserves to be more than a Sunday fling.
When Jesus becomes your first love, everything else you’re missing out on is a bonus:
“But seek first his kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”—Matthew 6:33, NIV.

Rest Stop:
Spend time asking Jesus to reveal what you rely on more than Him.
Ask Him to help you identify the lies you may believe about these areas of your life and decide to put Him first each day.
Rich truth and such a beautiful reminder Jesus is enough🙏🏾
Hi Sarah! I like this! And, it just so happens that the Lord led me to write about this very topic this morning!
But you get bonus points for citing one of my favorite Church fathers, St. Augustine. 😉
